Welcome to the Wairoa Agricultural & Pastoral Society.

 

The Wairoa A&P Society was formed in 1899 and the first show was known as a County Ram Fair and Show, held next door to the Frasertown Domain.

 

It was soon recognised that grounds were needed closer to Wairoa and the railway.

 

In 1920 the present site was purchased. The Wairoa Agricultural & Pastoral Society is a member of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand (RAS).

 

RAS promotes the development of agricultural, pastoral, horticultural, stock raising and forestry resources in New Zealand.

 

Historically the organisation has paved the way for initiatives and forward thinking and continues to promote and encourage excellence in the rural sector. The A&P Show has always been one of 'the events' for rural and town folk alike, and it is one of the last true family entertainment days in the Wairoa District.

 

The picturesque show grounds provide a perfect backdrop to the A&P Show. The mature willow trees planted around the arena provide spectatators with plenty of shade while watching their favourite events. On-going tree planting over the past few years is enhancing the grounds even more.

 

With open rodeo, competition shearing, dog trials and top class showjumping and equestrian events, we have more to offer than your average family day out. Sideshows for the Children, Lulu the Clown, Local Performers make for great family entertainment.

 

Although times have changed, the basic spirit remains years on. That spirit is the same one that has brought together the smaller communities of the country.

 

A spirit that has existed in Wairoa for one of those centuries.

 

Cyclone Gabrielle decimated Wairoa’s much-loved A&P Showgrounds in February 2023. Water and silt ripped through the buildings, destroying two and wrecking all the internal and boundary fences, leaving the grounds unusable. There is hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage. Working bees, fundraising and support has been ongoing and we are excited to finally be able hold an event on the grounds for our community.

 

The proposed spillway could see our showgrounds move to a new site. However we are looking forward to delivering the 2026 annual show at the existing Ruataniwha Road showgrounds.
